Mumbai University | Chemical Engineering Branch | Second Year Semister-III Subject Computer Application | Syllabus | Guidance | Marks Distribution.

Computer Application

a) Nick Name by Student's :- CA.

b) Short Information of Subject :-

i) Theory Examination :- 100 Marks.

1) Question paper will comprise of 7 questions, each carrying 20 marks.
2) Total 5 questions need to be solved.
3) Question No.1 will be compulsory and based on entire syllabus.
4) Remaining Questions will be randomly selected from all the Chapters and will be mixed in nature.

ii) Term Work :- 25 Marks.

The distribution of marks for the Term Work will be as follows :-
Attendance (Theory and Tutorial) : 05 marks.
Class Tutorials on entire syllabus : 10 marks.
Test (atleast 1) : 10 marks

iii) Practical :- 25 Marks.
As per the Mumbai University rules you will have to write the correct coding of any one Program which will be given to you by the External Examiner from the Programs that you have performed during Regular College Practicals. Also you will have to show that the program whose coding you have written is running successfully without any error to the External Examiner. In case if your program is not running, then more the errors in your program, lesser will be the marks you will get.

iv) Total :- 150 Marks

In the First Year you must have studied C++ Language and would be familiar to it. In Computer Application you have to use C language which is similar to C++ in writing the programs. The C.A. Question Paper comprises of Numerical Problems,Theory Questions and Programs. It is also a scoring subject. As if your coding is right you will get full marks. Also if the Numerical Problems you have solved are right you will get full marks. Again constant Practise of Numerical Problems and Programs can help you score well.

c) Best Book to refer :- For Numericals refer Shastri and for Theory Borrow notes from your seniors .

d) Short view of Syllabus :-

In all there are 6 Chapters in Computer Application :-

1) Chapter 1 :- Introduction
This chapter will give you all the basic knowledge about Software Evolution,Algorithm,How to draw FlowCharts,Software Development Life Cycle,How to Create,Open,Access and Close Data Files.

2) Chapter 2 :- Basic Concepts in Data Base Management Systems (DBMS).
This chapter will enhance your knowledge about DBMS & Visual Programming. It includes topics like DataBase system,DataBase Languages,Designing by Active Data Object(ADO),Open Data Base Connectivity(ODBC) and Applications of all the above factors to various Chemical Engineering Problems.

3) Chapter 3 :- Introduction To MATLAB.
This chapter will give you the knowledge about, How to create and work with Arrays,How to create and print Simple Plots,How to create ,save and execute Script Files, Function Files & How to do Programming in MATLAB.

4) Chapter4 :- Introduction to Robotics.
This chapter will give you all the required basic knowledge about Automation, Robot NC and CNC machines,Advantages & Disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence,Experts Systems and their Applications to Chemical Engineering.

5) Chapter 5 :- Numerical Methods.
This chapter includes Numericals based on following Topics :-
i) Solution of Algebraic and Transcendental Equations
ii) Bisection Method
iii) False Position Method
iv) Iteration Method
v) Secant Method
vi) Newton Raphson Method
vii) Muller's Method

6) Chapter 6 :- Interpolation.
This chapter will enhance your knowledge about,How to detect errors by using Difference Tables. Also it includes many other topics like Newton's formula for Interpolation,Central Difference Interpolation formula,Divided Differences, Interpolation with unevenly spaced points, Inverse Interpolation and Double Interpolation.
Also this chapter includes a another small topic i.e Curve Fitting ,Cubic Splines and Approximation which includes Least Square Curve Fitting,Data fitting with Cubic Splines and Approximations of Functions.

As stated earlier Computer Application Paper will comprise of Numericals Problems,Theory Questions and Programs. The marks distribution among these 3 factors is very irregular. Sometimes a Theory oriented paper comes whereas Sometimes a Numericals oriented paper comes. So to excel in this subject you have to study all the three factors. However the last two topics i.e Chapter 5 and 6 have an average weightage of 40-50 marks and are very easy & scoring. So study well this topics which will help you to score well.

Best of Luck......!!!!!!
