Process Calculation
a) Nick Name by Students :- P.C.
b) Short Information of Subject :-
i) Theory Examination :- 100 Marks.
1) Question paper will comprise of 7 questions, each carrying 20 marks.
2) Total 5 questions need to be solved.
3) Question No.1 will be compulsory and based on entire syllabus.
4) Remaining Questions will be randomly selected from all the Chapters and will be mixed in nature.
ii) Term Work :- 25 Marks.
The distribution of marks for the Term Work will be as follows :-
Attendance (Theory and Tutorial) : 05 marks.
Class Tutorials on entire syllabus : 10 marks.
Test (atleast 1) : 10 marks
iii) Oral Examination (Viva) :-
Best Quote to follow to crack any Viva :- " If you can't convince them, then Confuse them "
There will be an Oral Examination which will be taken by the External Examiner. The Examiner may ask any questions related to the subject from the entire syllabus. Generally in viva your Basic Knowledge about the subject is tested . From your answers the Examiner should get that " You have understood the subject ". Don't remain quiet in viva, say something whether right or wrong, because if you remain quiet then you may surely get a KT or a Re-viva.
iv) Total :- 150 Marks.
Guys let it be very clear cracking PC is not that easy, you need to do a lot of practise of numericals in it,which is the only way to crack this subject. It is almost a Numericals based subject . However max to max 10-20 marks theory may appear. It involves all the Basic Calculations. Study well this subject as you need the calculations in it throughout your Chemical future .
c) Best Book to refer :- K. A. Gavhane (Nirali Prakashan).
d) Short view of Syllabus :-
In all there are 7 Chapters in PC which are as follows :-
1) Basic Chemical Calculations
2) Material Balance without Chemical Reactions.
3) Material Balance with Chemical Reactions.
4) Recycle Operations
5) Energy Balances
6) Stoichiometric Aspects of Unit Operations.
7) Combustion
Average weightage of chapters :-
The marks distribution among the Chapters is very clear and equal. However, in every question paper a slight variation can be seen as in MUMBAI UNIVERSITY the Paper pattern changes every now and then .
1) Chapter 1 :- Basic Chemical Calculations have an average weightage of 18 Marks. Without studying this Chapter if you proceed further you will not understand anything. As the name suggests this chapter involves all the Basic calculations in chemistry which you will need in further chapters . In short the concepts discussed in this chapter are used in solving almost all sums in PC.
2) Chapter 2 :- Material Balance without Chemical Reactions have an average weightage of 20 Marks. In this chapter you will encounter sums in which you have to balance the reactants with the products used in process without involving chemical reactions. Once you understand how to balance the chemical processes, this chapter will shower marks on you.
3) Chapter 3 :- Material Balance with Chemical Reactions have an average weightage of 20 Marks. In this chapter you will encounter sums in which you have to balance the reactants with the products used in process involving chemical reactions. This is a bit tough chapter as compared to 2nd chapter. This chapter would show you how good you are in chemical reactions. Practise sums which will help you getting thorough with the reactions and grabing more marks from this chapter.
4) Chapter 4 :- Recycle Operations have an average weightage of 20 Marks. As the name suggests this chapter have sums on Recycling processes. Generally only one sum of 20 marks appears from this chapter. Many students keep this chapter as an option. Study this chapter atleast once so that you can aleast attempt the question .
5) Chapter 5 :- Energy Balances have an average weightage of 30 Marks. This is a very easy and a key chapter to score in PC . There are 3-4 types of sums in this chapter. Don't even think of skiping this chapter because skiping this chapter will make your way to KT.
6) Chapter 6 :- Stoichiometric Aspects of Unit Operations have an average weightage of 16 Marks. This topic involves sums same as chapter 2, but are slightly difficult. This is also an easy topic to study. But due to it's low weightage and large number of sums many students keep this chapter too as an option.
7) Chapter 7 :- Combustion have an average weightage of 16 Marks. This is a very easy and a small chapter. Generally only 2 sums of 8 marks each come in exam. Sometimes also only one sum come from this chapter. This is also an very easy topic and will help you score well.
Best of Luck......!!!!!!
