Mumbai University | Chemical Engineering Branch | Second Year Semister-III Subject Advanced Chemistry-I | Syllabus | Guidance | Marks Distribution.

Advanced Chemistry - I

a) Nick Name by Student's :- Ad-Chem or ADCH.

b) Short information of subject :-

i) Theory Examination :- 100 Marks.

1) Question paper will comprise of 7 questions, each carrying 20 marks.
2) Total 5 questions need to be solved.
3) Question No.1 will be compulsory and based on entire syllabus.

Class Tutorials on entire syllabus : 10 marks.
Test (atleast 1) : 10 marks

iii) Practical :- 25 Marks.
As per the Mumbai University rules you will have to perform any two Experiments which will be given to you by the External Examiner from the Experiments that you have performed during Regular College Practicals.

iv) Total :- 150 Marks

Advanced-Chemistry-I is almost a Theory Subject. It's also scoring and a start to your Chemical Engineering basics. Study well this subject because you need the concepts in this subject in your future Semisters too. Study well the Reactions which will help you score beyond your expectations.

c) Best Book to refer :- H.V. Jadhav (Also some teacher's recommend P.L. Soni ).

d) Short view of Syllabus :-

There are in all 6 Chapters in Advanced Chemistry-I, they are :-

1) Chapter 1 :- Chemical Bonding and Molecular structures.

2) Chapter 2 :- Co-ordination Chemistry.

3) Chapter 3 :- Organometallic Compounds.

4) Chapter 4 :- Dyes & Drugs.

5) Chapter 5 :- Electrochemistry.

6) Chapter 6 :- Reaction Mechanism.

Average weightage of Chapters :-
The marks distribution among the Chapters is very clear and equal. However, in every Question Paper a slight variation can be seen as in MUMBAI UNIVERSITY the Paper pattern changes every now and then . Generally every question asked in Ad-Chem paper have an maximum weightage of 5 marks.

1) Chapter 1 :- Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure have an average weightage of 20 marks. These chapter mainly includes a number of theories like Valance Band Theory,Molecular Orbital Theory,Crystal Field Theory,VSEPR Theory etc., and as the name suggests this chapter will give you broad knowledge about How Chemical Bonding take place to form different Molecular Structures. It's a theory chapter you have to be thorough with various theories in this chapter, their scopes and limitations.

2) Chapter 2 :- Co-ordination Chemistry have an average weightage of 20 marks. This chapter mainly involves the study of Co-ordination compounds. Also one or two numericals based on EAN or measurement of CFSE are asked in exam.

3) Chapter 3 :- Organometallic Compounds have an average weightage of 10 marks. This chapter involves the following topics :-
a) Chemistry of Fe-carbonyls w.r.t their preparation,properties and bonding.
b) Classification of Biomolecules
c) Application of Cytocromes
d) Oxygen atom transfer reactions of biomolecules containing Fe.

4) Chapter 4 :- Dyes and Drugs have an average weightage of 10 marks. This chapter mainly involves the study of colour, constitution, classification, synthesis and uses of various dyes and drugs.

5) Chapter 5 :- Electrochemistry have an average weightage of 15 marks. This chapter involves the study of topics related to Electrochemistry like Conductance,Effect of temperature on it,Transport number,Debye-Huckel theory etc.

6) Chapter 6 :- Reaction Mechanism have an average weightage of 25 marks. This is the key chapter to score in Ad-Chem. This chapter involves various reactions and their mechanisms. If your reactions are right you will get full marks .

Best of Luck......!!!!!!
